November 2024 Economic & Market Highlights

  • November delivered a boost to U.S. equity markets, fueled by post-election optimism. Large-cap stocks thrived, with the S&P 500 up 5.9% and Dow Jones soaring 7.7%, but small caps stole the spotlight, jumping 11.0% on hopes for tax reforms and deregulation.
  • The bond market also joined the party, delivering solid returns as easing inflation expectations and a positive economic outlook set the tone. The Barclays Aggregate Bond Index gained 1.1%, while municipal bonds rose 1.7%.
  • International markets, however, had a tougher time keeping up. The MSCI EAFE index slipped 0.6%, weighed down by sluggish growth in Europe and Japan. Emerging markets had an even rougher ride, dropping 3.6%, as a strong U.S. dollar and some mixed signals from China's economy took their toll.
